Uva ursi (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), commonly known as bearberry (because bears have a particular fondness for its fruit), is a small, evergreen prostrate shrub in the Ericaceae (heath) family. It is native to the northern latitudes of North America, Europe, and Asia, where it thrives in rocky, alpine soils. The plant is easily identified by its thick, leathery leaves and clusters of bell-shaped pink or white flowers. Historically, the leaves have been used in traditional Western herbalism since at least the 13th century, after being documented in the Physicians of Myddfai. It was also highly valued by various Native American tribes, who included it in smoking blends known as kinnikinnick and utilized it as a primary tonic for supporting the body's internal plumbing.
