Gotu kola (Centella asiatica), a member of the Apiaceae (parsley) family, is a low-growing, creeping perennial herb native to the tropical wetlands of Southeast Asia, India, and Africa. Often called the "Herb of Longevity" or "Fountain of Life," it has been a sacred staple in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2,000 years. Historically, it earned its reputation as a "brain food" from observations of elephants—known for their long lives and exceptional memories—who frequently graze on its fan-shaped leaves. Unlike the similarly named kola nut, it is caffeine-free and valued for its calming, restorative energy.

How To Use

Gotu Kola is a versatile herb most commonly enjoyed as a supportive herbal tea, but it can also be used topically as a compress for skin support. It has a mild, parsley-like flavor that pairs well with lemon or ginger.

Brewing Method:

  1. Boil Water: Bring fresh, filtered water to a boil (approximately 212°F / 100°C).
  2. Measure Herb: Use 1–2 teaspoons of dried gotu kola per 8 oz cup of water.
  3. Steep: Pour the hot water over the herb. Cover and let steep for 5–10 minutes for a standard tea, or up to 30 minutes for a deeper infusion.
  4. Strain & Enjoy: Strain the herbs and sip warm or chilled.
  • Optional Tip: For a concentrated topical compress, make the tea three times as strong and apply it to the skin with a clean cloth once cooled.
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in a sealed container. Prepared tea can be refrigerated for up to 3 days.
  • Safety: Consult a healthcare practitioner before use, especially if you have underlying medical conditions or are taking medications.
