Elecampane root (Inula helenium), a member of the Asteraceae (daisy) family, is a tall, striking perennial native to Europe and Asia and now naturalized in North America. Historically known as "Elf Dock" or "Wild Sunflower," it has been a staple in European folk medicine since the time of ancient Greece, where Hippocrates famously recommended it for its warming and stimulating qualities. Elecampanue root is highly regarded as a "lung tonic."

How To Use

Elecampane Root is most effective when prepared as a warming herbal decoction to support respiratory and bronchial wellness.

Brewing Method

  • Boil Water: Bring fresh, filtered water to a boil (about 205–212°F / 96–100°C).
  • Measure Tea: Use 1–2 teaspoons of the dried root per 8 oz cup of water.
  • Steep: Pour hot water over the root. Cover and let steep for 10–15 minutes (depending on desired strength).
  • Strain & Enjoy: Strain herbs and sip warm. Add honey, lemon, or sweetener if desired.

Optional Tips:
For a much stronger brew (decoction), gently simmer the root in a pot of water for 20 minutes before straining to extract more of its beneficial resins. It is commonly used to prepare natural cough syrups.
