Butcher's broom (Ruscus aculeatus) is a low-growing, evergreen shrub in the Asparagaceae family, native to Western Europe, North Africa, and the Near East. It is characterized by its stiff, flattened stems that resemble leaves (known as cladodes) and its bright red berries. The plant earns its common name from the historical practice of European butchers who bound its tough, antibacterial branches together to sweep and clean their wooden cutting blocks.
